One Series Left: Gaslamp Guardians and La Jolla Riptide Meet for the McClurg Champions Cup Final

After a summer of regular-season battles, individual milestones and two rounds of elimination hockey, the 2026 San Diego Elite Draft League season has reached its final destination.

The No. 1 La Jolla Riptide and No. 2 Gaslamp Guardians will meet Saturday, August 15, in a best-of-three series to determine the 2026 McClurg Champions Cup winner. Game 1 begins at 6:30 PM PST, with the championship decided before the night is over.

It is a matchup between the two teams that spent the regular season at the top of the standings—and one that gives Gaslamp an opportunity to rewrite the result of its most memorable regular-season meeting with La Jolla.

The Road to the Final

The postseason began August 1 with the third-seeded Old Town Outlaws meeting the fourth-seeded Torrey Pines Talons in the Wild Card round.

Old Town entered the playoffs with their core as the defending league champion and wasted little time establishing control, defeating Torrey Pines 12-4 to advance. The offensive explosion sent the Outlaws into the semifinal with momentum, while the Talons' season came to an end.

The victory also continued an impressive season for Ben Hoffmann, who was named Player of the Game following the Wild Card matchup. Hoffmann had already secured the 2026 regular-season scoring title with 21 points in nine games on 15 goals and six assists, establishing himself as the league's most productive scorer before carrying that momentum into the postseason.

Waiting in the semifinal was Gaslamp.

The Guardians had earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye, giving captain Kyle Agnello a chance to heal up and his roster an opportunity to watch the Wild Card round before facing the winner.

Old Town pushed Gaslamp throughout the August 8 semifinal, but the Guardians ultimately survived the defending champions with a 6-4 victory, securing their place in the McClurg Champions Cup Final.

Now only La Jolla remains.

No. 1 La Jolla Riptide: The Team Everyone Has Been Chasing

La Jolla's road to championship night could not look much different.

The Riptide finished the regular season atop the standings, earning the No. 1 seed and a direct trip to the championship series. From the early stages of the season, La Jolla established itself as the team the rest of the league would have to catch.

The Riptide's success has come from a combination of high-end scoring talent, depth and goaltending.

Dillon Bilek emerged as one of La Jolla's biggest offensive weapons, including an eight-point performance during a midseason doubleheader. Nate Kallen consistently created offense with his vision and finishing ability, while Jake Betsch, Jimmy Becker, William Anderson, Reed Kinsey and captain Nik Olsson gave the Riptide scoring threats throughout the lineup.

Behind them, Quinlen Johnston was recognized as the league's 2026 Top Goaltender, giving La Jolla another major advantage entering a series where one timely save could change the course of a game.

The question facing the Riptide is not whether they have the talent to win the championship. They have demonstrated that throughout the season.

The question is how quickly they can find their rhythm after receiving a direct path to the Final against a Gaslamp team that has already experienced playoff pressure.

No. 2 Gaslamp Guardians: Battle Tested

Gaslamp enters championship night having already survived its first elimination game.

That could matter.

The Guardians were forced to protect their season against an Old Town team that had scored 12 goals the previous week. Rather than allowing the Outlaws' momentum to carry them into another round, Gaslamp held Old Town to four goals and closed out a two-goal victory.

The Guardians have also shown throughout the regular season that their offense does not depend on one player.

Eli Hoffmann delivered one of the season's biggest individual performances with a six-point game consisting of three goals and three assists. Zack Nolte has produced timely scoring, while players including Bailey Ridout, Logan Wise, Anthony Mata and Agnello have helped give Gaslamp a balanced attack.

That scoring depth was on full display in an 8-4 regular-season victory over Torrey Pines when eight different Guardians scored goals.

For Gaslamp to lift the Cup, that depth will likely have to show itself again.

Previous Meeting: La Jolla Sends a Message

If Gaslamp needs additional motivation entering Saturday, it does not have to look far.

The previous documented regular-season meeting between the championship finalists belonged decisively to La Jolla.

The Riptide defeated the Guardians 7-2, breaking open what had initially been a competitive game with devastating transition offense.

Kallen scored a hat trick, Bilek finished with five points, and Johnston made timely saves as Gaslamp struggled to turn extended puck possession into goals. La Jolla repeatedly punished turnovers and defensive breakdowns with quick counterattacks and breakaways.

Perhaps most concerning for Gaslamp is that La Jolla produced that performance while playing without captain Nik Olsson and defenseman Reed Kinsey.

But championship hockey creates a different environment.

Gaslamp has had an entire season to evolve since that matchup, and its semifinal victory demonstrated an ability to withstand pressure that cannot be measured by the result of an early-season game.

Statistical Stars to Watch

Saturday's championship brings together several players who have defined the 2026 season.

Dillon Bilek — La Jolla Riptide: If healthy this weekend, he's one of the league's most dangerous offensive players. Bilek recorded eight points during a midseason doubleheader and produced five points against Gaslamp in La Jolla's 7-2 win.

William Anderson — La Jolla Riptide: Anderson's last recorded hat trick against Gaslamp on May 30 highlighted his ability to turn transition opportunities into goals almost immediately. His shiftiness through the neutral zone and ability to get behind the defense remains one of the biggest matchup problems facing the Guardians.

Eli Hoffmann — Gaslamp Guardians: Hoffmann has demonstrated the type of tide-turning scoring Gaslamp will need in the Final, highlighted by a six-point performance featuring three goals and three assists.

Quinlen Johnston & Zach Cummings — La Jolla Riptide: The 2026 Top Goaltender recipient along with Cummings as the only goalie to record a shutout this season gives the Riptide a proven final line of defense behind one of the league's deepest rosters.

What Could Decide the Championship

The regular season showed what La Jolla can do when a game becomes stretched out.

Gaslamp cannot allow Saturday's series to become a track meet.

Anderson, Kinsey and the rest of the Riptide have consistently demonstrated an ability to turn loose pucks and turnovers into immediate scoring chances. In the teams' earlier meeting, La Jolla repeatedly created offense off breakaways, odd-man rushes and quick-strike transition plays.

For Gaslamp, possession alone will not be enough. The Guardians will need to turn offensive-zone time into quality chances while remaining disciplined enough to prevent La Jolla from attacking the other direction.

The Riptide face a different challenge.

They have been waiting for this night.

Gaslamp has already played a postseason elimination game. La Jolla has not.

The Riptide will have the advantages of rest and preparation, but the Guardians enter the Final knowing exactly what playoff pressure feels like. An early Gaslamp goal could test La Jolla in a way the Riptide has not experienced during this postseason.

And in a best-of-three championship series played in one night, momentum can shift quickly.

One Night. One Cup.

The regular season determined the path.

The Wild Card eliminated Torrey Pines.

The semifinal ended Old Town's championship return.

Now the two teams that finished at the top of the standings are the only ones left.
